Looking Back on 2022…

The 2022 hurricane season was one of the most active and destructive on record, with numerous storms wreaking havoc across the Atlantic Basin. The season began early, with the first named storm forming in mid-May, and continued through the end of November, producing a total of 18 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes.

One of the most notable storms of the season was Hurricane Elsa, which formed in early July and made landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane. Despite its relatively weak intensity, Elsa caused significant damage and flooding across the state, particularly in the Tampa Bay area, and was responsible for several fatalities.

Another major storm of the season was Hurricane Ida, which formed in late August and rapidly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall in Louisiana. Ida caused catastrophic damage across the region, including widespread power outages, flooding, and damage to homes and infrastructure. The storm was responsible for dozens of fatalities and is estimated to have caused billions of dollars in damages.

In addition to these major storms, several other hurricanes and tropical storms impacted the Caribbean, Central America, and the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, causing widespread damage and disruption.

The 2022 hurricane season highlights the ongoing threat posed by these powerful storms and the need for individuals, communities, and governments to prepare and respond effectively to these events. As climate change continues to fuel more frequent and intense hurricanes, it is essential that we take steps to mitigate the impacts of these storms and build more resilient communities that are better able to withstand their effects.
